Statement of Faith

Our declaration of the core beliefs and principles held at East Mt. Zion Baptist Church, outlining our belief in God, scripture, and key doctrines.

We believe that God exists eternally and equally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Giver of all life. (Matthew 28:19; Colossians 2:9)

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is equal with the Father. Because of God’s loving nature, He gave us Jesus, fully human and fully divine, to live a sinless life and become the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people. Jesus was crucified, rose from the dead on the third day, and ascended into heaven, demonstrating His power over sin and death. He will return to reign as King. (Matthew 1:22-23; Romans 1:3-4; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Hebrews 4:14-15)

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and was promised by Jesus. He dwells within every believer from the moment of confession, guiding, empowering, and equipping us for our God-given purpose and mission. (John 14:16-18; Ephesians 5:18; Romans 8:15; Acts 1:8)

Jesus’ final command is our greatest mission—to go into all the world and share the Good News of salvation through Him. As  Christ-followers, we are called to proclaim His story and make

disciples of all nations. (Matthew 28:19-20)

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, given to provide clear direction for our relationship with God and one another. Written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it is the ultimate authority for faith, life, and church practice when rightly interpreted within its context and purpose. (Matthew 22:29; 2 Timothy 3:15-16; Romans 15:4)

Discipleship is about intentionally walking with others as they grow in faith. We plant the seed of the Gospel, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, we nurture and cultivate the spiritual growth of new believers. (1 Corinthians 3:6-9)

Salvation is God’s free gift, received by faith in Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, and ascension—trusting in Jesus is the only way to experience true reconciliation with God and eternal life. (1 Timothy 2:5; Romans 10:9)

Exodus 1:6-22

Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.

Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt. “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.”

11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly. 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.

15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” 17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”

19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”

20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.
