Lifeline History

In November of 1982, the LIFELINE committee was formed under the leadership of the late Deacon James E Manuel with the support of Deaconess Edith Manuel. LIFELINE began by serving fifty families per month. Currently, approximately 300 families are now provided with a four-day supply of food once a month usually at the end of each month. The program was not intended as a permanent relief fund but as a temporary aid to families until they are better self-sufficient.

To be eligible for the monthly program call LIFELINE at (216) 231-0284 the Monday and Tuesday after the second Sunday each month. If your name is on the list to receive the food, you will be called on the Wednesday or Thursday before the LIFELINE Saturday. The food distribution is the Saturday after the third Sunday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. LIFELINE is staffed by volunteers serving residents in the greater Cleveland area. People seek help for a variety of reasons. Clothing is distributed at the LIFELINE clothing store located at 9901 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106. Volunteers staff the store each Tuesday from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. No phone calls are required.

The income guidelines as set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are followed by LIFELINE. Families in emergency situations and are referred by a physician, clergy or social worker are served. Identification is required for each member of the family.

Other Services

Spiritual growth is encouraged through a worship service each LIFELINE Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM. Community liaison, sponsored by the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland, provide assistance in the areas of housing, employment, utilities, food stamps and other needs. A liaison is available LIFELINE Saturday or families may contact the Hunge.
